July 18 by Chris Bopst If there’s any music most related to summer, it’s reggae. I always find that funny, because lurking just beneath the surface of the universally beloved Jamaican music is usually a message of emotional, social or political militancy. The Itals headline the Richmond Summer Reggae Jam on Saturday, July 18, at the Broadberry. This legendary Jamaican vocal group was formed in 1976 by singers Alvin “Keith” Porter, Lloyd Ricketts and Ronnie Davis. Beautifully immediate, the group embodies the pre-dancehall, gospel-based sound of the island nation. Joining it will be Richmond reggae warriors Mighty Joshua and the Zion No. 5, New Kingston from Brooklyn, Virginia’s Beach’s Buddha Council and Ricochet Red from Rochester, New York. Doors open for the all-ages show at 8 p.m. Admission is $12-$15. And if you need more roots-rock reggae in your life this week, be sure to catch Morgan Heritage at the Broadberry on Monday, July 20. thebroadberry.com.
