The musicians of Black Masala don’t play gigs, they play shows. It’s an important distinction. Gigs are the musician equivalent of going to work. Shows are what you go to see when the workday is done. The Balkan-brass-inspired party machine from Washington knows the difference, and it puts on great shows. Sweaty and engaging, the group is known for the vivacity of its performances. It specializes in a cross-cultural blend of brassy funkisms that’s more ethnic in origin than Richmond’s No BS Brass band, but just as captivating and immediate in delivering a quality good time. A swirling ball of melodic action, Black Masala plays Saturday, May 23, at Cary Street Café. Richmond’s Afro-Zen All Stars get the global groove party started right with their Ethiopian-inspired dance floor inspirations. Doors open at 10 p.m. Free. carystreetcafe.com.
